Walk Safely to School Day

Primary school children across Australia will take important steps towards a healthier future when National Walk Safely to School Day returns on Friday 22 May 2026.

Now in its 27th year, the national initiative, championed by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, encourages children and families to build regular walking into their daily routine — not just on one day, but every day. The campaign highlights the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits of active travel to and from school.

Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, and walking before and after school is one of the simplest ways to help meet that target. Regular movement supports healthy growth, strong bones and muscles, improved cardiovascular fitness and overall wellbeing. Research also shows that active children demonstrate stronger concentration and cognitive performance, helping them arrive at school focused and ready to learn.

Walk Safely to School Day also responds to a significant national health challenge, with around one in four Australian children affected by overweight or obesity. Encouraging simple daily habits like walking to school can help build lifelong healthy behaviours while reducing traffic congestion and improving safety around school gates.

Safety remains central to the campaign, with parents and carers reminded that children under 10 must always hold the hand of an adult when crossing the road.

Parents and carers are encouraged to speak with their school principal, teachers or P&C about participating in Walk Safely to School Day and incorporating walking activities on Friday 22 May.

Schools are also encouraged to Host a Healthy Breakfast to reinforce the link between good nutrition and physical activity and to register for publicity to share their positive stories.

Batchelor Town Meeting

Batchelor Town Meeting

Batchelor residents gathered Thursday morning for a community meeting regarding the Daly River and Palumpa evacuee transition to the town.

Residents recognised there are many vulnerable community members who have been impacted by devastating flooding across the Daly River and Palumpa regions. It is currently expected that these communities may require assistance and accommodation for 2-3 months while their communities remain inaccessible or unsafe to return to.

The main concerns voiced from residents were the need to ensure public safety and security, and access to already limited essential services.

Batchelor Police confirmed that there is an increased police presence around the clock, focusing on safety for all. Additional CCTV cameras have been installed throughout town to assist with safety in public spaces.

The best way the community can assist the police with community safety is to continue to report any non-emergency incidents through 131 444.

Both evacuee accommodation sites are staffed with support teams, independent security and will soon be set up with independent medical teams to support the evacuated communities. The police and welfare teams are working to identify any community members who would prefer to be in Darwin/Palmerston and are actively working to assist them to relocate to reduce pressures on services in town.

The Batchelor Health Clinic staff assured residents that it is business as always at the clinic and all Batchelor residents should continue to make appointments, call for assistance or attend the clinic as they normally would.

Alcohol restrictions have been enacted for the town including limits on in-house drink purchases and takeaway purchases available only for people who are able to provide evidence of a local residence. These conditions will continue to be monitored and assessed and may change if required over the coming weeks.

The police recognise there has been a lot of confusion and uncertainty over the last week and are proposing to hold regular community meetings to keep everyone informed of changes as the situation progresses. Further details will follow when this has been confirmed.

Batchelor Evacuee Transition

Evacuee Transition

Coomalie Council would like to provide an update to residents regarding the Evacuee Transition to Batchelor.

The NT Government Department of Children and Families, through the Welfare Functional group, are coordinating the relocation of people from Daly River, Naiuyu and Palumpa communities to Batchelor township.

The evacuees will be placed in accommodation between the Batchelor Institute and the Batchelor Outdoor Education Centre. Community members have started arriving in town this morning and as the accommodation locations become available more residents will arrive over the coming week. Evacuees are expected to stay in accommodation in Batchelor for up to 2 months while flood waters recede and damage assessments are completed.

Council has stressed the importance of community safety, especially noting the concerns of vulnerable community members, with the Welfare group to ensure appropriate measures are in place. The NTG has assured Council that the safety of all is a priority. Both sites will have 24/7 Welfare staff, private security and restrictions in place including no alcohol, consistent with all evacuation centres.

This remains a moving situation as the weather events across the NT unfold and Council will endeavour to keep the community informed as further information becomes available.

From December 10th, 2025, a new age restriction will be in place for ALL Social Media platfroms within Australia.

These changes ar eimplemented Australia wide and will be implemented by the platforms to reduce the influence of these applications to help protect the health and wellbeing of young people within our communities.

The Northern Territory Goverment's Gamba Action Program starts in Coomalie for rural landowners from Friday 28th November 2025.

Program Details

Gamba Action Program is ran over the course of the wet season.

The program was created to help provide landowners with support in the fight against Gamba Grass, and weed management advice.

Land owners are strongly encouraged to be involved with the program.

Council has acquired a spray trailer than can be hired to landowners for this season.

Coomalie Community Government Council is seeking Expressions of Interest for a suitably qualified

person to become the Independent Member on the Council’s CEO Employment and Remuneration

Advisory Panel.

In accordance with the Local Government Act 2019 and Council’s Policy 1.03: CEO Recruitment,

Remuneration and Performance, the primary function of the CEO Employment and Remuneration

Advisory Panel is to provide advice and support to Council with regards to the management of the

CEO, including making recommendations on the following employment matters:

Recruitment and appointment of CEO.
Contract of employment and remuneration.
Performance reviews.
Contract expiry.

Applicants are invited to review Council’s Policy 1.03 CEO Recruitment, Remuneration and

Performance on Council’s website and submit their Expression of Interest, outlining their

Coomalie's Vet Days Round 2 Announced

Coomalie Council has released the dates for its second Vet Days program for the community for 2025.

Vets will be attending Adelaide River and Batchelor on the above dates to perform the following services:

Cat Trap Programming

In conjunction with the clinic days, Council runs a feral cat trapping program in the days leading up to the clinics.

Should you wish to host a trap, please contact Council on 8976-0058 to register your interest.

In the interest of responsible cat ownership, it is recommended that any cat you do not wish to be caught in the program be kept inside from the 13th - 16th of October.

Dates Announced for the 2025 Pre-Cyclone Cleanup

Council will be undertaking a clean-up of hard rubbish prior to the coming cyclone season.

Clean-up will occur for the following dates:

Batchelor - Monday 20th to Friday 24th October
Adelaide River - Monday 27th to Friday 31st October
Lake Bennett - Monday 3rd to Friday 7th November

Rubbish must be out the weekend before collection dates.

Small items which may become a projectile
Items able to be picked up by a single person

The 2025-26 Dog Registrations are now due for the period 1st September 2025 - 31 August 2026.

For this financial year Council are offering a 50% discount* for desexed dogs upon presentation of the desexing certificate.

As usual, a 50% discount* can also apply for concession card holders, this must also be presented at time of payment.

* Note only 1 discount can be applied per animal

You can pay your registration in person, over the phone or from Council's website here ! When making payment via the website please quote the 'Animal No' from your notice as the reference.

2025 Local Government Elections

The countdown to voting in the 2025 Local Government Elections continues, with nominations for council positions officially open from today.

Voters will vote to elect their local government representatives.

There will be 54 elections held for 144 vacancies in 16 local government councils across the Northern Territory.

Territorians interested in standing as a candidate are encouraged to act early. Nominations will close strictly at 12 noon on Thursday 31 July 2025. No late nominations can be accepted.

NT Electoral Commissioner Kirsten Kelly is encouraging potential candidates to take advantage of the resources available.

“Whether you’re passionate about your local community or looking to make a difference through local leadership, now is the time to get involved. The NT Electoral Commission website offers a comprehensive guide to the nomination process and our team is available to answer any questions,” said Ms Kelly.

The official declaration of nominations and ballot draw to determine the candidates order on ballot papers will occur on Friday 1 August 2025.

A number of voting options are available to support participation in the election including:

Early voting will be available from Monday 11 August to Friday 22 August 2025 at early voting centres across the NT.
Remote and urban mobile voting service delivery will run from Monday 11 August to Saturday 23 August 2025 in scheduled communities and urban locations.
Postal voting is available now, key deadlines are:
Overseas applications close at 6pm on Tuesday 19 August 2025.
Domestic applications close at 6pm on Thursday 21 August 2025.

On Election Day (Saturday 23 August), voting centres will be open between 8am and 6pm.

Territorians are encouraged to make sure they are correctly enrolled by the close of roll deadline of 5pm on Tuesday 22 July 2025. Enrolment checks can be completed online through the Australian Electoral Commision website on www.aec.gov.au .

The NT Electoral Commission is working with councils across the Northern Territory to raise awareness and support voter participation.

Cracker Night Comes to Batchelor

Cracker Night is on again at Batchelor Oval!

Tuesday 1st July 2024 from 4:00pm

For 2025 Council has secured a jumping castle to entertain the kids, this will be available from 4:00pm until 6:00pm!

Come along and enjoy some BBQ food provided by Batchelor Area School! There will be cost as the school uses this as a major fundraiser.

Just a reminder that personal fireworks will be allowed to be left off at Batchelor Oval once the all clear has been given by Howard & Sons, the contractor providing the big fireworks display.

It is expected this will occur at 7:00pm!

Reminder - Council takes no responsibility for personal fireworks, this remains with the person letting off the fireworks, Council holds no responsibility for any damage or injury caused.

Should you have any dogs that are upset by fireworks, please secure them in your property.

Draft Shire Plan 2025–2026- Building Connected Communities - FOR FEEDBACK

The Draft Shire Plan reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to open, transparent and community driven priorities. Council has actively responded to the feedback received from its communities and stakeholder groups.

The Plan provides the details of priority projects across the region including the townships of Adelaide River and Batchelor and neighbouring rural communities. The recently adopted Asset Management Strategy and Plan has guided the development of a number of these projects, including resealing of the roads in the Batchelor township and ensuring an improved network for people of all abilities.

“The Plan proposes a 4% increase in rates and fees and charges in order to achieve a balanced budget” said Mark Blackburn, Official Manager.

“These increases are necessary to meet the increased cost in existing Contracts to maintain current service levels and a significant rise in the weekly kerbside waste management contract” he added.

Council must also build a reserve to meet the long- term costs associated with the rehabilitation of Council’s waste management facilities. The Draft Shire Plan also includes piloting solar street lighting to improve community safety and scoping works to continue improve industry roads in the rural communities.

“Your feedback is vital. I invite everyone to engage with the Draft Shire Plan and work with Council to shape the future of the Coomalie Region” said Mark Blackburn, Official Manager.

Batchelor Community Postal Agency Update

Batchelor residents are advised that all mail services have been temporarily diverted to the Adelaide River Store/Post Office while Council works with Australia Post to establish a new Community Postal Agency (CPA) at the Batchelor Visitor Information Centre.

The short-term arrangement ensures Australia Post can continue to provide access to essential postal services during the transition. Council expects to complete fit-out works at the Visitor Centre next week, with staff training commencing simultaneously. Visitor information services will remain operational throughout this period.

The community is also reminded that the CPA will only be a distribution point for incoming mail and parcels. Other postal services will need to be accessed at other Postal Agencies in the greater Darwin Region.

An opening date for the new CPA will be confirmed by the end of next week, pending successful completion of the fit-out and staff readiness. The facility will combine postal services with existing visitor information services, maintaining Batchelor’s role as a key gateway to Litchfield National Park.

Council appreciates the community’s patience and assures residents that the Council’s interim CPA will keep mail services local while supporting tourism in the region.

The second activity is a Paint & Pizza evening with renowned local artist Bev Garside. This will be on Friday 11th April from 5:30pm.

On Sunday 2nd March 2025, join Coomalie Council staff and volunteers in cleaning up Adelaide River and Batchelor townships.

This Clean Up Australia Day, Council will be supporting the work started by Ian Kiernan AO, by holding clean-up activities in our 2 major towns.

Wear some old clothes and sturdy closed in footwear. Council will provide bags, gloves and other equipment for helpers!

Gamba Action Program Starts Friday 6th December 2024!

The Northern Territory Goverment's Gamba Action Program starts in Coomalie for rural landowners from Friday 6th December 2024.

Program Details

Gamba Action Program is ran over the course of the wet season.

The program was created to help provide landowners with support in the fight against Gamba Grass, and weed management advice.

Land owners are strongly encouraged to be involved with the program.

Under the program landowners are entitled to the following quantities of Glyphosate:

1 parcel of land - 5lt bottle
2 or more parcels of land - 2 5lt bottles

Coomalie Community Government Council is seeking Expressions of Interest from a suitably qualified person to become an Independent Member of Council’s Risk Management and Audit Committee.

Coomalie's September 2024 School Holiday Program is now available for enrolments!

This is a one day activity and enrolments are required for the day!

Enrolment forms are also available from Adelaide River and Batchelor Libraries.

A bus service will run from Adelaide River. Pickup 10:30am and drop off 2:30pm at the Post Office Store.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade is encouraging Territorians to be aware of Avian influenza, a serious disease impacting domestic and wild birds, including poultry.

While we’ve had no detection of the highly pathogenic strains (HPAI) in the NT, early detection is important and all Territorians can do their bit to help us detect a potential outbreak.

Key points:

Avian Influenza is a serious disease of wild and native birds, in addition to poultry such as chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys.
To date, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza has not been detected in the Northern Territory.
Early detection is critical in managing the potential spread of the virus.
Please report any sightings of multiple sick or deceased birds by contacting the 24-hour Animal Disease Hotline at 1800 675 888.

Rum Jungle Road Upgrades

Rum Jungle Project - Intersection Upgrades

Roadworks are scheduled to be undertaken later this year to upgrade the Litchfield Park Road/Rum Jungle Road intersection, and the Litchfield Park Road/Poett Road intersection. These upgrades will improve the safety of road users throughout the duration of the Rum Jungle Rehabilitation Project, and will include the installation of new left turn lanes, reconstruction of existing road pavement, installation of guardrails and signs, and line marking.

The roadworks will be scheduled to minimise disruption to road users, and will be staged to ensure that one lane of traffic remains open throughout construction. Traffic management will be in place throughout construction, including vehicle actuated portable traffic signals and/or traffic controllers. Access to nearby properties will be maintained at all times.

Cracker Night is on again at Batchelor Oval!

Monday 1st July 2024 from 5:30pm

Come along and enjoy some BBQ food provided by Batchelor Area School! There will be cost as the school uses this as a major fundraiser.

Just a reminder that personal fireworks will be allowed to be left off at Batchelor Oval once the all clear has been given by Howard & Sons, the contractor providing the big fireworks display.

It is expected this will occur at 7:00pm!

Reminder - Council takes no responsibility for personal fireworks, this remains with the person letting off the fireworks, Council holds no responsibility for any damage or injury caused.

Should you have any dogs that are upset by fireworks, please secure them in your property.

Join Coomalie Council as we pay respects to the fallen at our Dawn Service on April 25th, 2024.

Our commmemorative service starts at 5:30am and incirprates a refelective service with guest speakers from RAAF Base Darwin and Tindall.

Clean Up Australia Day is just aroun d the corner, and we need all Coomalie residents to do their part to ensure Coomalie remains a clean, friendly and litter free place to live and visit!

Council will be hosting 2 clean up sessions at Adelaide River and Batchelor on Sunday March 3rd from 8:00am - 12:00pm.

Clean up commences at 8:00am at the town ovals where the Site Supervisor will direct you to target areas for clean up action.

Equipment will be provided (bags, gloves, etc.). Make sure you wear boots or solid shoes!

A sausage sizzle will be provided from 11:30am for all those that participated in the clean up!

Council is working in partnership with the NT Police to improve Road Safety. Through the Road Safety Council . Coomalie Shire has received several car seats to distribute to our most vulnerable people and with the number of deaths relating to seat belts and unrestrained kids in the last 12 months the new year brings about a need to get this message across to people.

Due to air conditioner issues at the Batchelor Instiutute Library, they have been forced to bring forward their annual Christmas closure for the Health & Safety of their staff and patrons.

To ensure Council continues to provide a service to the Community, Batcheloor Area School have allowed us to utilise the school library from this Friday the 3rd November until the end of the school term, Sunday 17th December 2023.

When the Community Library re-opens after the Christmas break on Friday 12th January 2024, it will return to the Institute's Library.

Rum Jungle Lake Fish Release 2023

Additional Barramundi Released at Lake Rum Jungle

NT Fisheries this week released 25 larger barramundi and 80 fingerlings into Lake Rum Jungle on Monday 19th June 2023. This is in addition to the 300 fingerlings released during June 2022 at the Lake.

The 25 larger fish are all approx. 50cm long and are all tagged with a green tag. Should you catch one, please call the number on the tag and quote the reference number to receive a lure set for your efforts. The 80 fingerlings that were released are all 10cms in length.

Fisheries are more than happy with the condition and health of the lake and are looking to make further fish release in coming years!

Students from Batchelor Area School were in attendance as part of their school curriculum to observe and detail the release program.

Cracker Night is on again at Batchelor Oval!

Saturday 1st July 2023 from 5:00pm

Come along and enjoy some BBQ food provided by Batchelor Area School! There will be cost as teh school uses this as a major fundraiser.

Just a reminder that personal fireworks will be allowed to be left off at Batchelor Oval once the all clear has been given by Howard & Sons, the contractor providing the big fireworks display.

It is expected this will occur at 8:00pm!

ANZAC Day Commemorative Service 2023

Preparations are well underway for Council's annual ANZAC Day Commemorative Service.

The event will be held at the Adelaide River War Graves, commencing at 5:30am sharp and running for approximately 1 hour.

The Adelaide River Show Society will again be hosting a "Traditional Gunfire Breakfast" at the show grounds from 7:30am on the morning. There will be a cost per person for this activity.

Please note - traffic restrictions will be in place from 4:00am on the morning with traffic only able to flow into Memorial Terrace.

This will be reversed at 6:30am to allow traffic to exit safely.

It is requested that pedestrians utilise the footpath on the northern side of Memorial Terrace for maximum safety.

Some Handy Tips to Manage Your Information

T he nbn Co has provided some quick tips to ensure your safety in the real as well as your digital worlds this wet season.

Stay on your mobile : Keep a charged mobile phone and portable battery pack ready to use, if your connection over the nbn® is disrupted in an emergency event. Consider turning off cellular data on unnecessary apps to save battery.
Back up : To access important information and essential documents from anywhere, including insurance and financial documents, consider creating a digital back up on a USB or in the cloud.
Alternate power source : If there is a power outage, equipment connected to services over the nbn® network will not work. For home needs during these times, you might want to consider investing in an alternative power source, like a generator. Please note, alternative options like generators will not bring back home internet if the nbn network is also experiencing a power loss.
What happens in a power outage? Equipment connected via the nbn® network will not work during a power outage. While the nbn® network has in-built power resiliency, the nbn® network requires power at both the exchange and within the home or business to operate. Communities impacted by a power outage due to an emergency or other unexpected event should be prepared to be without internet, fixed line telephone and other services which require an internet connection for a period of time and have continuity plans in place that include alternate communications that are not reliant on mains power. If you have essential electrical equipment connected to the nbn® network you might want to consider investing in an alternative power source, for example a UPS or generator, to have on standby during emergencies
Equipment that may be affected by a power outage: Medical alarm, auto-dialler or emergency call button • Security alarms • EFTPOS or health claim terminal • Monitored fire alarm • Lift emergency phone • Fax and teletypewriter devices
Landline phones Note: This does not apply to those landline phones connected in nbn Fixed Wireless or nbn Sky Muster satellite areas, as nbn has not taken over the existing copper line. Check with your phone or internet provider. The nbn network requires power at both the exchange and within the home or business to operate. All types of landline phones (cordless phones, as well as older style un-powered corded phones) will not work in a power outage if you are in an nbn fixed line area (underground/overhead cabling).

Siam Weed

Update October 2022

Since the last newsletter in June 2021, there has been a significant range extension of Siam weed. This follows aerial surveys conducted during the Siam weed flowering season by the Weed Management Branch in 2021 and 2022. Siam weed is now known to be present on 11 properties in the Top End (compared with 3 in June 2021). The current known infestations sit over approximately 9,500km2 of the western Top End, with the furthest infestation now sitting over 100km from the first recorded infestation.

Based on this range extension of Siam weed, its eradication from the NT is not considered to be technically feasible. The reasoning for this is due to the extensive distances between infestations, the multiple means of seed spread, and the remote and rugged terrain that Siam weed now occupies.

Accordingly, the Northern Territory Government’s Siam weed emergency response has transitioned to ongoing management.

Government funding

Over the last 18 months, the Weed Management Branch has successfully secured Australian Government funding for two projects under the research and control streams of the Federal Funding Agreement for Enhancing National Pest Animal and Weed Management. Each of the projects has an assigned project officer. Tom Price took on the research role in August 2021, and Shelley Inglis commenced in an on-ground control role in September 2022.

Project Update

These 2 projects aim to:

1. Research the best practice and most cost effective tools for land managers to enhance the survey and control of Siam weed across the Northern Australia savannah.

2. Reduce the threat that Siam weed poses to Northern Australia by designing and delivering a targeted and coordinated Siam weed control program to contain core infestations and eradicate outliers in the Northern Territory.

Tom’s current research trial is underway by refining the aerial control techniques to determine the best aerial control methodology for Siam weed. Trials are aimed to determine:

the most effective and cost efficient use of herbicide and wetter mixes
refinement of chemical and application per hectare
the best timing for control when taking into account seasonal factors
incorporation of savannah burning practices to achieve better results

Research is also looking at providing land managers with a suite of different ground control options depending on the infestation scenario. These include:

chemicals and application times for low-volume, high-concentration splatter guns
trialling of soil applied residual herbicides
how best to incorporate savannah burning into ground control programs.

Treatments will be assessed to determine how effective they are, the costs of one treatment vs another and their potential for off target damage. The end goal of the project is the development of an integrated Siam weed management manual for landholders based on these research results. The project is due to conclude mid-2023.

Meanwhile, Shelley will be working with affected landholders and stakeholders conducting ongoing survey, mapping and control of Siam weed through until mid-2025. Priority will be the eradication of outlying infestations and containment of core infestations as well as delimitation surveys to determine the full extent of its range.

The project officers and the wider Weed Management Branch look forward to working with affected landholders and the wider community to implement the two federally funded projects above, helping to reduce the threat of Siam weed to the Northern Territory.

Japanese Encephalitis

Background

On 4 March 2022, the Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) situation in Australia was declared a Communicable Disease Incident of National Significance (CDINS), following detection of JEV in animals, and identification of cases in humans. JEV has been found in feral pigs across the Top End in 2022 and 3 human cases of JEV have occurred in the NT since 2021.

Some facts

Safe and effective vaccines for JE are available for people aged 2 months and over but due to limited supply in Australia the vaccines must be prioritised.

The current resident NT priority groups are:

Personnel who work in feral pig or mosquitoes surveillance, control and management such as environmental health officers, veterinarians, entomologists and rangers
People living and working in an area for at least a 30-day period within 10 km of where a human case has been acquired. This currently is as of 9 September 2022 - the Tiwi Islands, Gunbalanya and Adelaide River. The immunisation team from CDC is working with the clinics in these 3 areas to roll out the JEV vaccine.

What you should do

Get vaccinated
Keep flyscreens closed on tents and windows
Wear long loose fitting clothes
Apply effective mozzie repellent containing DEET
Tip out any dirty water where mozzies can breed
Limit outdoor activity at dawn and dusk

As the pre-cyclone clean-up program has now completed, white goods are no longer accepted at Batchelor Waste Facility.

White goods can be taken to Shoal Bay Waste Facility in Darwin.

Council will be undertaking a clean-up of hard rubbish prior to the coming cyclone season.

Clean-up will occur for the following dates:

Adelaide River - Monday 3rd October to Friday 7th October
Batchelor - Monday 10th October to Friday 14th October

Items must be placed on the kerbside the Sunday before collection.

Fore residents not within the town boundaries, white goods will be accepted only at Baster Waste Facility for the month of October.

Wet Season Road Weight Limits Commence 1st October

The annual Wet Season Road Weight reductions commences on all roads within the Coomalie Shire from Saturday 1st October until the end of the Wet Season.

Should you need to exceed the new posted weight restrictions, please complete an application form and submit to Council 2 business days prior to date of transit to ensure Council Officers can undertake an inspection of the road prior to transit.

Should anyone travel without a permit, and the road is damaged, all repairs will be at the businesses expense.

Annual Art Show

Coomalie's First Annual Art Show

Art Show Comes to Coomalie

Coomalie's first Art Show is a little over a week away with opening night scheduled to start at 6:00pm on Friday 23rd September! Art works are also available for viewing on Saturday & Sunday the 24th & 25th from 9:00am - 5:00pm.

Judging will occur during the opening night by a select panel of people from the Top End community.

Finger food is provided throughout the night, and drinks can be purchased at the bar. We have negotiated with our hosts, the Litchfield Outback Resort, a selection of 5 cocktails for guests to purchase.

Music will be provided by Therese Balanzatugi, who regularly performs for us at Australia Day and our Bombing of Darwin Commemoration.

Some items that are displayed can be purchased, and Council will have facilities on hand to facilitate the purchase.

Coomalie Council is hosting its inaugural Art Exhibit and Show at the Litchfield Outback resort from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th September.

The event will kick off with a Cocktail Party on the Friday night from 6pm until 9pm, where attendees can view the entered works.

There will be a 'Best in Show' prize as well as a 'Peoples Choice' award.

Entries are accepted by all artists, and are strongly encouraged from local community members. Entries cost $20 per piece, with a maximum of 3 entries per artist. Any medium of art will be accepted!

Artists will be able to sell their works with a commission of 20% payable on all sales.

Entries close Friday 16th September 2022.

The Annual Dog Registration period commences 1st September until 31st August each year.

Dog registrations are now due for all properties within Coomalie Shire, this includes rural properties.

Some Tips on How to Pay Your Rates

The Rate Notice

To the right is a sample rate notice for a fictitious property in Adelaide River, this details important information regarding your property.

Property Number - this is located on the left of the notice in upper third. To ensure Council staff can assist your inquiry, please quote this number when calling.
Balance Brought Forward - this details any amount owing from the previous year.
Rates Calculation - shows the formula for how your rates are calculated.
Waste Management Charge - shows the applicable charges for your property.
Rebates - shows any rebates that have been applied to your property, these could be Pensions rebates and the like.
Installments - shows your options for paying your rates. If you pay by installment interest does not accrue on the 2nd amount until after the 2nd payment is due. Paying by installment can assist your cash flow.
Payment Reference - these are the details if you pay your rates via BPAY.

Payment Options

Council allows various payment options for paying of rates, these include:

Bank Transfer - on the back if your rate notice it details Council's BSB and Account Number for payment from your Bank.
Over the phone - Council staff are ever willing to assist taking your payment over the phone by Credit Card.
In person - You can pay your rates over the counter at Council Offices, either with cash or Debit or Credit Card.
BPAY - Payment from your bank via the BPAY system, these details appear on the front of your rate notice.
From Council's Website - Council has created a new portal via the Commonwealth Bank where you can pay your rates via Debit or Credit Card direct to Council in a safe and extremely secure manner. This can be done from https://www.coomalie.nt.gov.au/rates

For all payments, and in all inquiries regarding your property, please ensure you quote your Assessment Number.

Scams On The Rise Again

NT Consumer Affairs (NTCA) is an independent office within the Department of the Attorney-General and Justice and aims to protect consumer interests by proactively providing awareness of a range of common issues affecting consumers. This is undertaken through a number of mediums such as social media posts and videos, attending community events and supplying promotional material through appropriate networks.

Sadly, scam activity in Australia is on the rise. The recent Australian Competition & Consumer Commission’s Targeting Scams 2021 report, highlighted losses of more than $2 billion by Australians. This staggering figure is the combined losses reported to Scamwatch, ReportCyber and 12 other financial and Government agencies. The report also shows that $110 million was lost to phone and text scams.

NTCA has recently received an increasing number of reports from vulnerable people and other organisations about community members being targeted by scammers, particularly through phone and text scams.

In response to this ever increasing scam activity, NTCA has developed a number of posters warning vulnerable Territorians about romance and other scams. As we are limited in our ability to physically visit the many regional and remote communities in the NT, we are asking for your assistance to spread the warning of scams to our vulnerable population. We encourage your organisation to help protect Territorians by actively displaying these posters and if possible, warning people about scams.

NRL League Stars is coming to Adelaide River

As part of Sport & Recreation Funding we have received from the Northern Territory Government, we have managed to secure the NRL League Stars skills sessions for a 6 week period for free .

These sessions will commence on Monday 15th August 2022 from 2:45pm - 4:00pm at Adelaide River School.

Batchelor Power Works

Works Commencing June 6th to 9th

Power and Water will be undertaking works to the Batchelor power lines between June 6th and 9th in an effort to reduce outages caused by bats.

Coomalie's AusKick program kicked off last Thursday the 19th, with 19 children coming along to enjoy games and activities provided by AFL NT.

Along with children from Batchelor, several children made the drive from Adelaide River straight after school to attend!

It's not too late to enrol your child as the program continues at Batchelor Oval for the next 5 weeks until the end of Term 2!

Researchers from Charles Darwin University want to understand how Territorians are connected through their social networks, community participation and attachment to the place they live.

my Territory Connections is an on-line survey with questions about the interaction Territorians have with their family, friends and neighbours, the things they do to help each other, and what they give and take from their communities. Results will be used to guide decisions about what is making life better and who might be missing out.

AusKick Program Comes to Batchelor!

After some negotiations we are pleased to announce that a FREE AusKick program is being held in Batchelor for 6 weeks from Thursday 19th May at Batchelor Oval from 3pm - 4pm.

The program is open to all 5 - 12 year olds within the Coomalie region!

Manager Works and Services

Reporting to the CEO, the Manager Works and Services is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the Works and Services Department.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to; Supervising the Regulatory & Works Supervisor and Outdoor Workforce Team members, planning, management and maintenance of all facilities, infrastructure and assets, management of Council’s fleet, plant and equipment and assist with the response/recovery in accordance with Council Policy for Emergency Preparedness and Response, being available for on-call callouts. The position also manages Contractors and the Waste Management Strategy, administers the implementation of Council By-Laws.

The applicant requires well-developed written and verbal communication skills to prepare accurate documentation and reports, participate in preparation of annual and quarterly reports, annual plans, budgets projects and documents as required by the Chief Executive Officer.

The applicant also must be able to make sound judgements and have decision making and problem-solving skills and sound knowledge in WHS/OHS compliance.

Relevant qualifications, management & civil works experience, Local Government and Coomalie region knowledge would be beneficial.

Current NT Drivers Licence

Compliance with CHO Direction (52 & 60) 2022 is essential.

Bombing of Darwin Commemoration

It was a hot and humid morning for Coomalie’s Bombing of Darwin Service for the Commemoration of the 80th anniversary.

This year we had a very special guest, Mr Brian Winspear, the 101 year old veteran from the Bombing on the 19th of February 1942, was in attendance.

Mr Winspear was accompanied by The Chief Minister, Michael Gunner, and various Members of Parliament who came together with the community to commemorate the events 80 years ago.

Special thanks to Coomalie Shire workers for putting together the event and to Mr Dheran Young, Member for Daly, for providing morning tea.

Australia Day Celebrations & Citizen of the Year Awards

Australia Day celebrations occurred at Batchelor Area School on Wednesday 26th January 2022, with a free Big Breakfast for all Coomalie Shire residents.

Massive thanks to all our volunteer helpers on the day. Please see later in this edition for some candid snaps of all our winners and citizens on the day!

Citizen of the Year Awards were presented to:

Citizen of the Year - Paul Bonavita
Young Citizen of the Year (Under 30) - withheld due to no nominations being received.
Community Event of the Year - Rum Jungle Bowls Club Mixed 4's Event.

Please keep in mind these worthy awards for 2023, the nominations we get the better the event will be!

Establishment of new road - Milton Road

Pursuant to Section 273 of the Local Government Act 2021 Council intends to establish a new road in Stapleton.

As background, a survey of No 505 (Lot 10) Milton Road, Stapleton established that the road pavement had encroached onto the landowner's land. A further survey of the road service established that this encroachment of the road pavements (and suitable width of verge) also affected No 435 (Lot 11) Milton Road, Stapleton.

Council has negotiated with the two affected landowners and obtained their consent to Council acquiring portions of their land for the purpose of widening the road.

Council intents to open Milton Road as detailed on the attached plans.

Pursuant to Section 273 of the Local Government Act 2021, the public is invited to make a written objection to the proposal. Written objections will be received from Thursday 26th August 2021 until Friday 24th September 2021. Plans are available on Council's website www.coomalie.nt.gov.au or at its Administration Office, 22 Cameron road Batchelor.
