Understanding H5 Bird Flu
Understanding H5 Bird Flu
Avian influenza A(H5) viruses naturally circulate among wild aquatic birds worldwide and can infect domestic poultry and other bird and animal species. Although these viruses do not normally infect humans, sporadic human infections have occurred, usually after close, prolonged contact with infected birds or their droppings.
SYMPTOMS IN ANIMALS
If you keep poultry or interact with wild birds, it is also important to recognize the signs of the disease in animals, which can include:
- Sudden death, especially in large numbers.
- Lack of coordination, tremors, or unusual postures like a twisted neck.
- Respiratory issues such as coughing, sneezing, or difficulty breathing.
- Swelling around the head, neck, and eyes.
- A rapid drop in egg production or feed intake in poultry.
WHEN TO SEEK HELP
If you develop flu-like symptoms or eye redness within 10 days of close contact with sick or dead birds, or potentially contaminated environments, you should seek medical attention promptly. Be sure to inform your healthcare provider about your recent exposure to birds.
If you are experiencing severe symptoms, such as extreme difficulty breathing or neurological changes, seek emergency medical care immediately.
